Dear Parents and Carers,
This week we conducted Parent Teacher meetings for Years 1 to 6. The feedback from teachers has been very positive and we are extremelty grateful to the time that our teachers have given to provide the interviews. A huge thank you to our parents who have been able to come in and attend the interviews. If you were unable to keep your appointment or have not yet arranged a time to meet, we encourage you to contact the front office to arrange a time with your child’s teacher. As mentioned in the previous newsletter, there have been some significant changes made this year by CE, to the reporting format. Individual student comments will not be used in the Semester 1 Reports. The Semester Report in this format encourages parent engagement and conversation about student learning hence we cannot stress enough the significance of these interviews.
We are extremely proud of our students and equally as grateful to all our parents for choosing to send your children to St Bede’s and the huge support that you provide to our wonderful school. Throughout the year, I have continuously received feedback from staff, members of our local community and visitors to our school, about how polite and well mannered our students are. They are not only a credit to our school but also you all as parents. As the saying goes…it takes a village to raise a family! Thank you, parents, for trusting us with the pleasure to educate your children.
This month we celebrate Catholic Schools across the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. St Bede’s have commenced the process of accepting online enrolments for 2022. We will be conducting an Open Day tour on Thursday, May 27 from 9:30am to 10:30am. If you are wanting a tour of the school but this time does not suit, please contact the front office to organise a suitable time. A child must turn 5 years of age by 31 July of the year of enrolment.
We are extremely grateful to Beck and Tim Thistleton and Marita Fuhrer who volunteered their time to clean the canteen. We thank them as this will assist to get the canteen back up and running before the end of this term but for this to occur, we are relying on parents to volunteer their time. It is envisaged that the canteen will operate each Friday for lunches. We are seeking a Canteen Manager/Manageress. This person would do the ordering and purchasing of food as well as plan the Menus. It would involve a few hours each Friday assisted by parent volunteers. Once we have found a manager, we will send a note home seeking volunteers. If you think you could spare a few hours each Friday to run the canteen, please contact the front office or Beck Thistleton on 0438 211071
We are extremely grateful to our parents who have volunteered to be class representatives. This is a great opportunity to get to know other families at our school. We are still seeking a Class Representative for Year 4. If you think you could do this job, please contact the front office. Recently, Kinder families conducted a very successful gathering at the park.
Next Tuesday we are celebrating our feast day. The children are permitted to wear casual clothes to school in recognition of this. We are looking forward to celebrating the feast day of St Bede’s with a Mass at 10am followed by a variety of events throughout the day. We thank Ms Kaptein for her organisation.
We are looking forward to the Athletics Carnival tomorrow and thank Katie Tooth our Sports Coordinator, for all her hard work in preparation for the carnival, staff for their assistance and our wonderful parents who have volunteered to assist on the day.
God Bless

NAPLAN
NAPLAN has been completed for another year! Thank you to our Year 3 and 5 students along with their teachers Mrs Barling and Mrs Ryan for their efforts over the last week and a half. Thank you also to Mrs Kilburn, Mrs Bartley, Mrs Stewart and Mrs Ridley who assisted our students with NAPLAN. It has been a busy time and I think the students will be happy not to hear the ‘N’ word for a little while at least. With the majority of tests online, results should be back more quickly. When I have further information it will be passed on.

Soccer goal maintenance
Can you assist? Our much loved soccer goals are in need of some love and attention. They need reassembling with perhaps tape to hold them together. We have some spare parts [pipes, connectors, etc] behind the sports shed. If you have a spare 30 minutes at anytime, your help would be appreciated.

Did you Know?
Did you know that World Melanoma Day is coming up on the 23rd of May and World Sunscreen Day is coming up on the 27th of May?
These days are placed in May because in the Northern Hemisphere this is when UV starts to increase. For us in Australia, it signifies a decrease in UV levels. Despite the unfavourable timing, it is a great reminder that going into the cooler months sun protection is still needed!

Sacrament of Reconciliation - Save the date
5:30pm Tuesday 22nd June 2021 at St Bede’s Church.
Further information will be provided directly to the children’s families
Next week on Tuesday 25th May, we will celebrate the Feast of St Bede.
Our whole school mass will be at 10am at St Bede’s Church. During mass we will announce the recipients of the St Bede’s Award. One student from each year level will be chosen by the staff. The St Bede’s Award is for displaying Christian leadership and dedication to their school work. This is to celebrate that St Bede was a scholar. Parents are invited to attend the Mass, however, social distancing will still be required.
After Recess we will have our St Bede’s Book Fair. We are asking children to bring in a book that they no longer read and donate this to our book fair. On the day all children will be allowed to purchase one of these books for a gold coin donation. All proceeds will go towards the Year 5 & 6 Camp fundraising effort.
After Lunch our Year 6 leaders will organise tabloid sports for the whole school to participate in. This is a much-loved tradition at St Bede’s and our Year 6 leaders are looking forward to coordinating our first tabloid sports of the year.

Library News
Welcome to Week 5.
The Year 6 students at the moment are engaging in some Project -Based Learning. Each student has chosen an Asian country to study in depth. They are presenting their work in different formats, some of which is being displayed in the library. We will be holding an ‘Asian Expo’ towards the end of term.
Each week, I set up a table in the library with an ‘Author of the Week’. This week’s author is the very funny comedian David Walliams. These books are perfect for the reluctant reader. Below is a list of some of my favourite books.
Fing, The Creature Choir, Mr Stink, Billionaire Boy, The Slightly Annoying Elephant, Beast, the Bear Who Went Boo, Gangster Granny and The World’s Worst Teachers.
The theme of Bookweek this year is…’OLD WORLDS, NEW WORLDS, OTHER WORLDS’. It runs from 21 -27 August.
