Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Friday, Braidwood was blessed with a beautiful sunny day for our swimming carnival. Everybody participated with enthusiasm and swam their best or had fun participating in the novelty events. The children looked fantastic in their house colours and their chanting was outstanding. It was wonderful to see so many of our parents and grandparents at the carnival helping out and supporting our students. A big thank you to Katie Tooth for her amazing organisation and to Beck Thistleton for organising the yummy barbeque. Congratulations to Araluen (Red) who were our winners on the day!
Recently we had our opening school mass. During the mass, our Ministers were presented with their badges. They have all embraced their leadership roles and are looking forward to leading our school. We congratulate the following students:
Prime Ministers: Daisy and Evie
Araluen House Captain: Angus and Oscar
Budawang House Captain: Matthew and Natalie
Gillamatong House Captain: Bowen and Jacob
RE/Library Minister: Stella
Environment Minister: Digby
Art ministers: Gordon and Aidan
Celebrations Ministers: Jesse and Josh
It ministers: Lyall and Ethan
Last night we had our first Community Council meeting for the year. At the commencement of the meeting all positions were declared open. We had several parents who were interested in being a member of the Community Council which is wonderful for St Bede’s. During the meeting we discussed fundraising and set up a fundraising sub-committee. Our fundraising initiatives this year will support the purchase of new house flags for St Bede’s and new furniture for the refurbished classrooms and front office area.
The members of our Community Council for 2023 are:
Community Council Chair: Amanda Vardanega
Community Council Deputy Chair/Maintenance: Richard Bunn
Secretary: Anthony Haraldson
Treasurer: Katie Lyons
Parent Representative: Sarah Paciorek
Parent Fundraising Representative: Kristi Morrison and Committee: Beck Thistleton, Millie Di Maio, Marita Fuhrer and Rachel Farley
Commencing Monday, March 13, I will be taking long service leave until the end of term 2. whilst this was a difficult decision for me to leave this amazing community, I have not had any leave since 2012. During my leave I will be travelling overseas doing a sabbatical to the Holy Land as well as personal travel. Arrangements are being put in place for my role during my absence and you will be notified once that has been finalised.
A note was sent home with every student this week requesting class representatives for each year level. The role is not too taxing but it involves organising a social event outside of school on a weekend once a term, supporting any families in need eg a new baby or an unwell parent providing meals etc. If you would like to take this role on and unsure what to do, please don’t hesitate to contact Marylou for more information. If you are unable to be a contact but would like your children to be part of the activities, please return your notes to school which will provide the class contacts with permission to call you.
God Bless
Marylou GorhamOur School Counsellor, Sharman is available each Wednesday, during the school term, at the school. If you think your child would benefit from seeing Sharman please complete the online referral form at https://catholiccare.force.com/housing/s/school-referral-form.
We commenced our year with staff prayer focusing on God’s care for us and that we can count on God at the difficult times in our lives. Our whole school Mass last week was a lovely time for us to come together as a community in God’s home to celebrate the Eucharist. For us to gather as a community with St. Bede’s parishioners was a highlight of the Mass.
The overview for this year is that Term 2 will be the time for Year 2 to commence their program and make their First Reconciliation and Year 3 Catholic children will make their First Holy Communion in Term 3. There won’t be Confirmation this year as Year 5 and Year 6 combine to make this sacrament every second year. Classes will continue to go to the parish Mass on Tuesdays at 10am and in Week 5 we celebrate Shrove Tuesday followed by Ash Wednesday Mass. This commences Lent in our church and a time to prepare for Easter.
At school we have prayer times during the day. Sometimes these are formal prayers such as the “Our Father” but other times there are informal prayers where children say their personal prayers. These are two ways for families to pray together.
On Shrove Tuesday, ( 21 February) students will be able to purchase pancakes at recess for a gold coin donation, proceeds go to project compassion. We are asking for donations of pancakes from any parents who are able to cook and send these to school on Tuesday morning.
We warmly invite you to be at our Parish Mass next Wednesday at 10 am at St Bede's Church to celebrate Ash Wednesday. This follows Shrove Tuesday.
Enjoy your week.
Helen

What an amazing day we had last Friday for our first carnival of the year! It was fantastic to see so many parents and families attending what was an action-packed day full of brilliant swimming, enthusiastic war cries, a closely run parents vs teachers vs Year 6 relay, and a delicious BBQ lunch provided by the Community Council.

Dear Parents and Carers,
As I’m sure you’re aware, our Library is presently being used as the Year 3 classroom. This is in preparation for the impeding classroom renovations. Without a functional library, book browsing and the borrowing of books is not possible at the moment. We do have access to a digital library, known as Sora, and I will re-introduce the students to this capability over the next few weeks in the class library lessons. I’m also aware of the importance of children having access to “real” books. To this end, I plan to walk the students to the town Library during their Library lesson in the coming weeks.
If you would like your child to be able to borrow books, they would need to have a borrowing card form Queanbeyan Palerang Regional Council. Please follow this link to join your child and obtain a library card. https://library.qprc.nsw.gov.au/
In preparation for this library adventure, I have included each classes’ library times and days. In the next newsletter I will list the planned days each class will visit the QPRC Braidwood library. For these visits, parent support to walk the children to and from the library would be appreciated.
