Year 4 ,5 & 6 Excursion by Jolyon
Yesterday the Years 4, 5 and 6 went on an excursion to Canberra. We started at 8:30am to ensure we arrived at te Australian Institute of Sport by 10am. Once inside the AIS, we met our guide Jamie. He is a volleyball athlete training at the institute.
He took us on a tour of the facilities, where we saw a male gymnast practicing on the uneven bars with his coach in the gymnasium.
We moved on to see the indoor volleyball courts. The courts are used by the male, female and para Olympic volleyball athletes. The floor has a special springy floor to help the athletes land without hurting themselves when they jump up to hit the ball. Some players often jump over a metre off the ground.
Jamie then took us to the competitive Olympic swimming pool. This pool is a consistent depth of three metres and has room below the water line to allow coaches to watch and film swimmesr in the water.
We ended our tour at the Sportex Simulation Centre, in which we could try Olympic and Winter sports and compete against an AI competitor.
After the AIS, the excursion went to the National Botanical Gardens. We ate lunch at the gardens and walked along several nature trails. Here we saw lizards sunning themselves on rock at the rock pool.
On our way back to school, we stopped at Mount Ainslie. Even though it was extremely windy, we had a chance to take in the breathtaking views of Canberra from an elevation of 843 metres AHD.
